Crystallized, Venus Vacation, and Velvet Bethany
[INDIE] Sugar City is the place to be this weekend if you’re looking for something heavy, fun, and noisy. Four-piece experimental rock band, Crystallized, comes in from Petersburg, Florida for this one to deliver their electronic-tinged noise rock. They’ll be joined by post-rock band, Venus Vacation, and female-fronted garage rock band Velvet Bethany. Head to Sugar City this Saturday, October 6 for this one.
Nietzsche's Hip-Hop Night: 14 Trapdoors Edition
[HIP HOP] Hip hop returns to Nietzche’s for this event featuring a bunch of rising Buffalo-based artists. Hip hop trio, 14 Trapdoors, featuring members Bendyface, Short Moscato, and Wza, take the top slot. They’ll be joined by Medusa, Chill Ali, Little Cake, and The League. Check it out, Thursday, October 4 at Nietzsche’s.
Heroine Hijack
[POETRY] This one-off event is designed to showcase poets, comedians, and artists—all women and all based out of Buffalo. Heroine Hijack, which will take place on Saturday, October 6 at the Ukrainian-American Civic Center, will feature poets Megan Kemple, Marielle Smith, Rachelle Toarmino, and Bianca L. McGraw, as well as comedians Jamie Travale and Allie Brady. A few artists will display their work, also, including Tara Bystran Sasiadek, and McGraw. Keep an ear out for the Living Dead Girls podcasters, too.
First Friday
Ghastly
[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] Ghastly has been on the rise for a few years. The electronic dance music artist has released music on some of the most well known dubstep labels in the game including Skrillex’s OWSLA label, Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak, Boregore’s Buygore label, and Mad Decent. That’s quite the resume for an artist who just put out his first full length record, Mystifying Oracle, this year.
Gwar with Hatebreed
[METAL] It may be rainy this week, which gives you an excuse to wear a raincoat to GWAR’s usually bloodsoaked live concert at the Town Ballroom on Sunday, October 7. The satirical, over-the-top heavy metal band has a tendency of spraying their audiences with fake blood as they deliver searing guitar solos while dressed almost as real life action figures. Their late lead singer, David Brockie a.k.a. Oderus Urungus, unfortunately passed away in 2014, but the band has since brought in former bassist Michael Bishop a.k.a.

Turkuaz
[JAM] As one of the headliners of the Cobblestone Live music festival in Downtown Buffalo over the summer, Turkuaz delivered a fast, funky, and freaky set of jammy funk music that had the packed crowd dancing throughout. They likely gained a few new fans during the outdoor festival, who’ll likely be tuning into the band’s new record, Life in the City, which was released earlier this week. The record, the band’s fifth, bounces cleanly from R&B to rock, and funk throughout the nine-song album, which follows a 17-song live album, 040717, released earlier this year.
