It’s easier to say what Inherent Vice isn’t than what it is.
[SCREENING] Called “the most extraordinary film I’ve seen in my life” by no less than Ingmar Bergman, the 1967 documentary Portrait of Jason was all but lost for decades.
Sony Pictures has just announced that it will screen The Interview at Houston’s Alamo Drafthouse Theater on Christmas Day. This is presumably in response to a petition from the Alamo, which was supported by other independent cinemas including our own North Park.
“The following is based on a true story.” I’ve come to dread seeing that sentence at the beginning of a film because it means I have to deal not only with what appears on screen but also its fidelity to the events the film is based on. And who wants to have to do all that work?
It wasn’t Bill Murray’s finest moment.
Seldom have I ever been moved by a film as I was by Joyeux Noel, a 2008 nominee for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. It certainly deserved to win more than the South African film that did take the prize, Tsotsi.
