NPR Tiny Desk Contest Local Entrants Showcase
[INDIE] Ironically, getting to play a Tiny Desk concert is a mighty big deal. NPR’s web and radio series, wherein famous folks and buzzing up-and-comers alike cram into a teeny room at NPR and perform a short, pared-down set—usually in the morning when everyone feels/sounds like shit—has become a rite of passage. For example, it’s something Adele, Jackson Browne, and newcomer Chelsea Wolfe have all done. And it’s a test of sorts: “Here are some less-than-ideal live performance conditions… lots of people are watching and listening. Have at it.” Local contests to win a Tiny Desk gig, which require a video submission, are highly competitive events, and Buffalo isn’t to be left out of the running. Topping the bill this time ‘round are Chelsea O’Donnell’s band Wolf and celebrated six-piece Parade Chic, but show up early to catch them all while the folks at NPR make their decisions: Andrew Kothen, The Observers, Small Smalls, Tom Stahl, and First Ward. Tuesday, March 1 at Mohawk Place.
