American Music at the BPO

[MUSIC] This weekend’s program at the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra is a celebration of Americana: some Leonard Bernstein, some Phillip Glass. The centerpiece, “Fanfare for the Common Man” by Aaron Copland, may contain the most compelling opening bars of composed music in the American canon, and, tellingly, the first bars are silence, followed by a brash flood of sound: the sound of the many and the so, so much. Tt would be anachronism to call it a prescription, but the elegiac brass and strings should burn away all divisions. Maybe it should be our national anthem. What say you, JoAnn Falletta? What say you, concertmaster Dennis Kim? It’s not in your bailiwick to take positions, only to play what you feel in your hearts. Make us feel it, too.
