A WEDIT Benefit: Empower Refugees, Empower your community.

[BENEFIT] It takes strenuous time and effort for refugees and immigrants to acclimate to this country. Often, we don’t realize how complicated the mundane, basic activities we participate it on a daily basis can be for new Americans. Fortunately, Buffalo is equipped with a plethora of services for refugees. Resettlement agencies, community centers, and other programs are available to remedy the complications.

Westminster Economic Development Initiative (WEDI) is a nonprofit that has been serving Buffalo’s refugees, immigrants, and West Side residents since 2006. This Thursday at 5:30pm, they are hosting a benefit at Resurgence Brewing Company.

Capacity Building Specialist Luke Panciera said this event is more than just a fundraiser. It is an opportunity to educate. “With the current climate in our country, the refugee population has it very difficult. They didn’t choose to be in the situation they are in, but it is the hand they were dealt and they really need help.”

Panciera said WEDI is looking for people to help them beyond monetary commitments. They want to inform the public about their programs and the various ways they have been serving the community. ENERGY Director Carol Greetham talked about the benefits of the ENERGY after school program. ENERGY, a free education program that assists children ages six to 13 in learning English, is not a typical after school program, with an attendance rate of 96%. “A lot of kids come into our program struggling with their school work. They are given material to read which is often above their ability to read and understand. When they come to ENERGY, they feel encouraged and secure—that [environment] allows learning to take place.”

Tickets for the event are $25, which allows you to enjoy an open bar and food from the West Side Bazaar.
