Metz + Viet Cong

[PUNK] Buffalo fans who got a taste of Metz when the band opened for Lightning Bolt in April will be treated to a full headlining set when the Toronto-based band returns to Mohawk Place on Thursday, July 23 with indie-punk band Viet Cong. On May 5 Metz, the Toronto-based, Sub Pop-signed noise-punk band released Metz II, a pop-damaged fuzz-punk album and followup to their 2012 self-titled debut, which put them on the map for post-hardcore fans and garnered them critical acclaim. NPR called the band’s 2012 debut ”raw, belligerent, dissonant and powerful,” and II continues that trend, twisting Nirvana-influenced melodic grunge tracks through the blades of a noise-punk blender. Their fellow Canadian touring partners, Viet Cong, recently ran into controversy over the insensitivity of their name (a Minneapolis-based newspaper published an article simply titled “Viet Cong is a Stupid Band Name”) but they’ve soldiered on nonetheless, releasing a solid, self-titled debut album earlier this year, which received the “Best New Music” mark from Pitchfork. The combination of art-punk band Viet Cong and noise-rock band METZ will surely shake the foundation of Mohawk Place just a little bit when this stellar tour comes through on Thursday. Crosss open the show.
