Mighty Mighty Bosstones

[SKA] The Mighty Mighty Bosstones formed in the mid-1980s, but it was their 1997 release, Let’s Face It, that showcased the emerging ska band’s razor sharp capacity for melodic hardcore. For the next two decades they experienced a little turbulence via lineup changes, but by 2011 they reemerged with the ironically titled, The Magic of Youth, proving beyond a reasonable doubt that their sound was as mighty as ever. Trading in their hard rock sensibilities for fresh reggae pop punk, their ska melodies seemed smitten with some new sounds. Filled with uplifting spirit and unique, yet beautiful instrumentation, this album boasts confidence, maturity and positive vibes from “The Daylights”—a fiery bang of an opener paved with smooth, rhythmic verses—to the album closer, “Open and Honest,” a punk-rock anthem reminding loyal fans that they haven’t forgotten their roots. Their new songs play great live alongside classics like “Toxic Toast,” and their in-concert stamina hasn’t faltered in the slightest—they still spit fanatic punk-rock anthems that sound just as solid as ever. Catch the Mighty Mighty Bosstones at Canalside on Thursday, July 9.
