Herd Fest

[FESTIVAL] Herdfest, the four-day long music festival presented by buffaBLOG, is hitting up Buffalo’s bar scene for the third year in a row this Thursday, June 16 through Sunday, June 19 and the lineup is for the indie lovin’ masses. You’ve got your pop (think the light and surfy indie band Coral Collapse or dream-pop noobs Mutual Friends), pop punk and garage pop (more like Comfy or the New Masons) but then there’s your garage punk, emo punk, rock punk (check out the girl punk trio Thick) and experimental punk to choose from. There’s a whole lot of lo-fi, post-rock (Tomoreaux!), and psychedelic rock (look for Sixites Future) going around but don’t forget the classic miscellaneous sounds like experimental dark-pop basement electronic music, improvised electronic music, and some good ole jangle pop! The festival wraps up the weekend with an entire Sunday dedicated to rap and hip/hop at Mohawk Place (check out Chemical Ape with the opening set) while the rest of the venues, Nietzsche’s, Dreamland, Milkies, Mr. Goodbar, Record Theater and DBGB’s, get a chance to rest. With more than 130 bands playing, it’s hard to choose just a few, but here are six more bands to check out. For a full list of bands, venues, set times, and more see Herdfest.com. All shows range between free and $5.

 1.  Gillian: Super catchy melodies, super good time. Be sure to catch them on Friday at Nietzsche’s. (Can’t stop listening to their anthem “Out & Out”!)

 2.  Moody Cosmos: Poppy, rocky, garagey. Definitely don’t want to miss the boys on Friday at Milkies. Also, the bandcamp picture is of one of the MC’s playing a flute so you know they’ll be good.

 3.  Deadwolf: Psychedelic rock gods. Word around the block is that their yet-to-be-released album is something to be considered. They’re playing right after Moody Cosmos on Friday at Milkies.

 4.  Dean Chatham: A mellow and smooth hip-hop artist to bring home the festival. He’ll be serving it at Mohawk Place on Sunday night.

 5.  Night Slaves: The dark-pop basement electronic duo referred to in the opening paragraph.

 6.  Wood Bois: Improv with drums, a keyboard, a guitar and lyrical talking. These guys get weird.
