[ALT COUNTRY] For Chuck Ragan—former frontman of the Florida-based, post-hardcore outfit, Hot Water Music—going solo meant leaving one of the greatest punk bands of the decade, packing away the angst, and embarking on a country-tinged folk journey. The quest seemed crazy, but his latest release, Till Midnight, melodically screams that he made the right decision. From the neo-country ballads driven by delicate guitar picking, to the driving drums and country-guitar led rockers with explosive choruses – the gravel-throated singer is truly at his best. He’s cultivated a hybrid that cleanly bridges the gap between post-hardcore and alternative country. His musical maturity hasn’t staled his stage presence. If anything, it’s propelled his confidence. Even when it’s just Ragan and his acoustic guitar, it’s like he’s running on rocket fuel, and that energy ignites the crowd.
