[JAZZ] The Albright-Knox Art of Jazz series returns this Saturday, October 29. Under the direction of UB music professor and trumpeter Jon Nelson, the series—which was re-established last fall—has taken on a currency that befits a gallery dedicated to the modern, and which seems hell-bent on reasserting its national and international reputation. The opening act this years is illustrative: Saxophonist Steve Coleman is a recipient of a 2014 MacArthur Genius Award, recognizing a remarkable 30-year career as bandleader, composer, recording artist, and theoretician. He will be joined by Jonathan Findlayson (trumpet), Miles Okazaki (guitar), Anthony Tidd (bass), and Sean Rickman (drums)—collectively known as the Five Elements. Come hear the guy who pianist Vijay Ayer once described as, in terms of influencing a generation of musicians, “as important as Coltrane.”
