[POP] Discovered fresh out of college in Charlottesville, VA, and signed to Dave Matthews Band’s Red Light Management, Parachute makes no bones of their big pop aspirations. Their latest, Wide Awake (Vanguard) finds them pared down from a five-piece to a trio, thus creating greater space in the arrangements and offering a new, distilled version of the pop sound at their core. The new disc, which was released in March, reunites them with producer John Fields, who stepped away for 2013’s Overnight. Overall, the new tracks are simultaneously passionate and refined. There’s nothing groundbreaking happening here, but Parachute makes catchy, solid pop music. “We felt like we had no limitations to chase this sound that the three of us have wanted to build for so long,” front man Will Anderson explained in a press release. “It was as if we were woken up from some sort of slumber, revitalized and rejuvenated with this new awareness of who we are as a band.” Check them out at Buffalo Iron Works on Wednesday, July 27, with Brynn Elliott.
