Dweezil Zappa Plays Frank Zappa
[ROCK] The unfortunate feuding between the older and younger Zappa siblings over the Zappa Family Trust has been in the news lately, but that hasn’t stopped the greatest Zappa tribute show from mounting its annual tour. Dweezil Zappa Plays Frank Zappa is the new name. Apparently, under the former moniker, copyright infringement fines would start at $150,000 per song performed, despite Dweezil being Frank’s direct descendant. This summer’s tour is now called “50 Years of Frank: Dweezil Zappa Plays Whatever the F@%k He Wants – The Cease and Desist Tour.” If the sentiment seems annoyed, that’s because it is, but Thursday’s Canalside performance won’t suffer one bit. In fact, it might be more fun. Whereas previous ZPZ tours have always revived specific albums from the iconic innovators vast catalog, this year is a tossup. The tour hasn’t started quite yet, either, so we can’t offer speculations—but Dweezil will be accompanied by his usual crack team of talent: Scheila Gomez (sax, flute, keys, harmonica, vocals), Ryan Brown (drums, percussion, vocals), Ben Thomas (vocals, brass, rhythm guitar), Chris Norton (keys, violin, vocals), Kurt Morgan (bass, vocals) and Mikki Hommel (lead/harmony vocals). Head on down to the waterfront anytime after 5:30 and grab an Adirondack chair to experience a musical adventure in the truest Zappa tradition.
