Sinkane

[POP] The musical project of Ahmed Gallab throws back while moving forward. Call it afro-futurism. Blending elements of 1970s funk and disco with jazzy ideals, prog structures, and flourishes of electronica, Gallab melds past and present for a rhythmically contagious tomorrow that’s simultaneously worldly, melodic, and hypnotic. As the son of two Sudanese college professors, Gallab arrived in the States at the age of five. By 18 he’d settled in nearby Ohio, where he built a reputation as a sought-after session man, eventually contributing to releases from Caribou, Of Montreal, Yeasayer, and Eleanor Friedberger from Fiery Furnaces. Now signed to DFA Records (launched by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy) and based out of Brooklyn, Gallab is between releases (the most recent was a collaborative EP of dub remixes with Peaking Lights last year) and working up his new material, which he’ll perform some of at Mohawk Place on Sunday, June 26. Though he’s considered a one-man-band in the studio, Sinkane usually expands to a quartet in a live setting.
