Japanese Breakfast

[INDIE] If you’ve slept on Japanese Breakfast’s 2016 album Psychopomp, it’s not too late to get familiar with it before the group comes to Mohawk Place on Sunday, April 23. Japanese Breakfast is a new project formed by Michelle Zauner of the little-known yet very good Philly-based group Little Big League. Where Little Big League is a basement indie rock band, Japanese Breakfast is more of a lo-fi dream pop band, and Psychopomp is the result of Zauner’s grief process after moving to a small town in Oregon to care for her mother who had fallen ill and eventually passed away. The results are, however, not as dark as Zauner’s subject matter, on the surface at least. Psychopomp is full of glimmering dream pop songs that exude love and positivity, even on songs that directly address her mother’s death, like album opener “In Heaven.” The album made many year-end best-of lists and seems to have a lot of potential in a live setting. Support from Rebecca Ryskalczyk and The Leones.
