Neutral Milk Hotel

[INDIE ROCK] “Dear friends we love you but it’s time to say goodbye for the never ending now,” read the press release for Neutral Milk Hotel’s 2015 tour announcement. The lauded indie-rock band has maintained a discontinuous existence over the last decade.

Lead by Jeff Mangum, the group disbanded in 1999 after the release of their second album, the critically acclaimed In the Airplane Over the Sea, a record that has become a cult classic among indie rock fans for its ironically sweet melodies and broken-down lyrics. In 2005, the popular indie blog Pitchfork gave the album a perfect score, comparing its influence to 1990s records like Radiohead’s OK Computer, Pavement’s Slanted and Enchanted, and My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless. The reclusive Mangum tip toed around the project for most of the early 2000s before returning to live performances in 2010.

In 2011 the band released a compilation EP of songs written between 1992 and 1995 before returning for a full reunion tour in 2013, when they played their first shows together in nearly 14 years. If it’s true that this will be the bands final tour, then you may not want to miss their show at Asbury Hall on Tuesday, April 21.
