George Winston

[ROCK] Most are familiar with Winston’s solo piano recordings for Windham Hill, which have collectively gleaned him five gold and three platinum or multi-platinum albums between 1980 and 1999—making him one of the most commercially successful solo pianists of all time. While those records (and the Windham Hill label on the whole) are most closely associated with the “new age” genre, Winston is more than that. His interest in rock and blues is what got him playing, originally, and he started out on the organ, inspired by Ray Manzarek of The Doors. In 2002, he released an album of Doors songs entitled, Night Divides the Day. In fact, since the mid-1990s, he’s released a number of blues driven records and a pair of tributes to hero Vince Guaraldi in addition to a solo harmonica album in 2013. His “rural folk piano” is what he’s most remembered for, however, and despite a series of debilitating illnesses (the last of which resulted in a bone marrow transplant), Winston’s playing remains dexterous and mighty evocative. Don’t miss his singular mix of soothing, seasonal and landscape-inspired instrumentals, likely mixed with some Guaraldi, blues and maybe even a Doors cover, on Wednesday, March 13 at Babeville’s Asbury Hall. Doors are at 7pm, $35/$40. Bring something canned for a food bank donation!
