[R&B] In 2007, at just 16-years-old, New Jersey singer/songwriter Quincy Mumford teamed up with four great musicians to form Quincy Mumford & The Reason Why. Five albums, four Asbury Awards, and over 600 shows later, their lush brand of R&B-infused, funk rock hasn’t staled; it has only welcomed new styles and emotions into the mix. Their 2013 album, It’s Only Change, doesn’t simply blur the boundaries of rock, soul, jazz, reggae, funk, and hip-hop – it’s far more romantic than that. Styles like raw 1970s rock, funk, and soul flirt with modern hip-hop and reggae, and they’ve all got some serious game. The outcome isn’t idiosyncratic but rather sound, well adjusted, and pleasantly accessible. Standout tracks like the horn-driven “Under The Covers,” or “When You Get Back”—a piano ballad with reggae vibes—are laden with glimmering jazz sounds by way of a symphony of instrumentals. Wading deeper into serenity with slow rollers like “Eventually” and “Madeline,” they reveal a more introspective side through honest lyrics and Mumford’s soft, dreamy vocals.
