Reel Big Fish

[PUNK] The Town Ballroom continues to celebrate their 10th anniversary with a show this Saturday, February 6 featuring Reel Big Fish. Flying in on the coattails of mainstream ska artists, like Sublime and (early) No Doubt, the SoCal outfit emerged in the mid-1990s with “Everything Sucks.” Their 1996 sophomore album, Turn The Radio Off featured the hit single “Sell Out,” and almost overnight, RBF’s following blew up. Seven studio albums later, they released Candy Coated Fury in 2012, which seemed to pick up where they left off in the 1990s—with snarky lyrics over happy tunes and a triumphant horn section. Some criticized this lack of maturity, but the thing is, Aaron Barrett and his crew aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel. They unabashedly embrace their sound. Their discography, which spans two decades, always gives fans exactly what they want: upbeat ska melodies with upstroked guitars, a brassy horn section and sarcastic lyrics. So “reel” fans shouldn’t get their panties all in a bunch. Similar to their albums, their live shows haven’t changed a bit, but no one is complaining about that. Featuring a mix of classics, new favorites and (of course) covers, their live shows are still the energetic, dance-tastic buckets of fun they’ve always been.
