[ALTERNATIVE ROCK] On Thursday, January 22, local alternative rock artists will pay tribute to their influences at Show Your Influence, a concert at the Forvm. The lineup reads like a brief summary of the evolution of alternative rock over the last two decades. Third Realm will perform Nine Inch Nails’ industro-rock and synth-laden melodies; and given TR’s edge and capacity for producing catchy electro-rock, Reznor’s cuts should sound great. Nirvana’s purposely ragged, yet tuneful cuts were one of the first forms of mainstream alternative rock in the 1990s. Buffalo’s BigBottleRocket will be playing tracks from In Utero and Nevermind—both staples of Nirvana’s musical trajectory. Simple Science will bring the energetic melodies of Weezer’s Blue and Pinkerton albums. In the months following Cobain’s (and Nirvanas’) death, risk-taking, nerd rockers, Weezer, graced alt-rock fans with overdriven power-pop drenched in metal. Finally, Dollar Diplomacy will play the turbulent modern blues of Jack White. This is especially fitting considering Dollar Diplomacy’s tendency to intricately layer sounds in a similar vein as White, not to mention their searing, high-pitched vocals, which are more than capable of a Jack White howl.
