Bird Captures: Julian Montague & David Adamczyk

[ART] Mankind’s fascination with birds and flight most likely has its roots in prehistory, so in a digital age where the means of reproduction are nearly infinite it’s not surprising that bird photography remains an enduring pursuit with hobbyists flooding the internet with their high-definition actions shot. Buffalo artist Julian Montague’s collection of photographs on display throughout 2015’s first month riff on the hobbyist trend with an element of amateurish whimsy that brings the field of ornithology to the mental fingertips of everyman: “Bird Photography Attempts 2004-2014” are 100 photos taken without the benefit of a telephoto lens or any kind of specialist equipment. They aim to represent the quick and surprising element of a bird sightings: seeing a Cooper’s Hawk flash in between houses hunting squirrels, for example. Accompanying Montague’s works will be the live performance of David Adamczyk, a virtuosic violinist who endeavors the art known to many birds: mimicry. “Flying Mobiles” attempts to capture slices of birdcalls on the violin, accentuating their often alien sound structures.
