Looking Backward: Genesee & Ellicott, circa 1980

by / Oct. 18, 2017 8am EST

Genesee Street, at the edges of downtown, was not so long ago a solid wall of brick three, four, and five story buildings. In this photograph taken in about 1980, a nearly intact block of Genesee Street, seen on the northern side near the corner of Ellicott Street, is depicted. An entire district of such mixed-use buildings were built around the Chippewa Market food emporium. Two of the three buildings depicted here remain, one of which (on the right at 112 Genesee Street) today houses the Marble + Rye restaurant. The larger building on the left had wrapped around Ellicott Street, anchoring the intersection, but is today a parking lot.
