The Public’s weekly local music reviews and previews.

Album:  Something For Us by Space Cubs

Recommended if you like:  Four Tet, Bjork, Boards of Canada

Space Cubs a.k.a. Suzanne Bonifacio is prepping the release of her new album Something For Us out on Unspeakable Records on October 21. Bonifacio’s mission on this record was to experiment with different recording techniques and media. “I want to create a world within each song. I want to get lost,” she says in the press release for the album. The 8-song album wades through upbeat folktronic moods on “Knots” and “Not Knowing” to haunting experimental strangeness on “That First Day” and “Want” and the passive pleasure pools of “Don’t Make Sounds” and the title track, “Something For Us.” Something For Us is Space Cubs’ second full length album.

Album:  Green Slime by Green Slime

Recommended if you like:  Alice in Chains, Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins

The first record from a new Buffalo-based duo—Eric and Blake Ellman—a.k.a Green Slime, was released this week on Bandcamp. The self-titled record is 12-tracks of heavy, fuzzy garage rock music in the vein of Smashing Pumpkins and Alice in Chains with hints of Weezer and some unknown darker entity. Highlights include the obvious single “Love Forever,” the nerd-rock anthem “Lisa Frank 666,” and “Purple Jansport” (sensing a theme here). The record was recorded with Jay Zubricky at GCR Audio in Buffalo.
