Looking Backward: Sycamore & Ash, Circa 1980

by / Jul. 25, 2017 5pm EST
Few neighborhoods have suffered as badly as the Near East Side from the erosion of historic building stock. Here, at the northeast corner of Sycamore and Ash streets, is a typical 19th century commercial block building depicted in about 1980. The One Stop Quik Shop is in operation at the corner, around which ghost signs are visible for Kessler whiskey and Phoenix beer and ale. At a vacant livery stable to the rear, an advertisement for “Topper” pilsener, manufactured by the Standard-Rochester Brewing Company until 1970, is visible. The corner site, at 160 Sycamore Street, is vacant today.
