Buffalo Beer Buzz
Your weekly rundown from the Buffalo Niagara Brewers Association on what’s happening locally in the beer scene.
HAMBURG BREWING’S PATIO Spring has finally sprung and that means the one-of-a-kind waterfront patio at Hamburg Brewing Company is open for business. In honor of the changing of seasons, the brewery is prepping the release of Sweet Tang, a sessionable citrus lager brewed with grapefruit, a beer perfectly suited for sunny patio drinking. The beer will be available on tap at the brewery and in six-pack bottles. HBC also recently released Noble Ginger, a ginger rye ale, and Tart Simpson, a kettle sour, their first venture into the sour arena. Tart Simpson will be featured at the Brewers Invitation Festival on April 2. |
HAPPY HOUR SERIES The Buffalo Beer League will bring their Happy Hour series to Flying Bison on Friday, March 25, 5-7pm. They will be selling tickets to the Brewers Invitational, which takes place April 2 at Pettibones, and will also be raffling off a free pair of tickets for the festival. In honor of the occasion, Flying Bison will be tapping a pair of very special casks—Helldiver oatmeal pale ale dry-hopped with Nugget hops and Pineapple Buffalo IPA (casks pour at 4pm). Local artist MJ Myers will also be on hand with an installation of his drawings, sketches, and paintings, beginning at 6pm. |
FAREWELL BLUE MONK Elmwood craft beer institution Blue Monk will shutter its doors later this year after nearly six years in business. As for the reason behind the closing, landlord Kevin J. Brinkworth said that Mike Shatzel decided not to sign a lease extension. The Blue Monk has a 27-year lease with five renewable three-year options, with one on the table that Shatzel opted not to sign due to ongoing disputes with partial owner Kevin M. Brinkworth. Shatzel has stated that he is currently looking for a new space to reopen under a different name and with a slightly tweaked concept. |
BEER SPOTLIGHT Resurgence Brewing Company’s Sour Is Love Cherry Cider Berlinner Weisse, the latest in their collaboration series with Cider Creek Cidery, begins with a base kettle sour beer, which is blended with cherry cider and then fermented together. Sour Is Love features three different yeast strains (Brettanoymyces, Saison, & Bavarian Wheat Yeast) as well as Plain Wegmans Organic Greek Yogurt, which is added for its natural bacterial content. This beer, plus many, many more, will be available on tap at the Brewers Invitational beer festival on April 2 at Pettibones Grill.
