The Manhattan Hotel, 466 Michigan Street, was reportedly Buffalo’s first African-American hotel. Mack Gordon Anderson, pictured fourth from the left, opened the tavern hotel with his wife Bettie Spencer Anderson in about 1910. Advertised as a “refined cabaret” with Chinese and American dining and “modern conveniences,” the Manhattan Hotel was a mainstay of Michigan Street, later Michigan Avenue. The building, at the southwest corner with William Street, no longer stands.
