ARIEL ABERG-RIGER is a Buffalo-based designer, artist, and activist. This illustration is part of a series that will recur in The Public, a publication Aberg-Riger coddles like an unkempt stray puppy: Her love makes us think you ought to love us too.
Here’s what she says about this piece:
Dorothy Thompson. 1893-1961. First American journalist to be expelled from Nazi Germany for her aggressive anti-Nazi reporting. Returned home a hero, continuing to speak out against anti-semitism and push for immigration reform so that more European Jews could seek refuge in the U.S. Was shunned, smeared, and silenced just a few years later when she began to write about the plight of Palestinian Arabs.
