Giving Diabetes a Kick

In Western New York, some 140,000 people are affected by the scourge of diabetes, according to Independent Health CEO Dr. Michael Cropp.

And in some communities, it’s even worse. Audrey Oswell, chief operating officer for Seneca Resorts & Casinos, stated at a press conference on Wednesday that among the Seneca community, diabetes affects 1 out of 2 people.

State Senator Tim Kennedy elaborated on the crisis: “According to a report conducted by the New York State Health Department, approximately two-thirds of adults living with diabetes in New York State live outside New York City, and the prevalence of diabetes has only continue to increase over the last decade.”

The American Diabetes Association’s 25th annual “Tour De Cure” fundraiser event kicked off with 25 hours of collective riding by their many sponsors and partners. Surrounding Wendesday’s press conference was an array of stationary bikes being operated by Revolution, a Buffalo indoor cycling fitness center.

The owner of another Buffalo indoor cycling center, Saddle, was on hand to support the event. Rod Nagy pledged that anyone who signs up for the May bike race and gets $80 in fundraising can use his center for free between February 14 and April 15.
