At the company’s peak around 1919, the Larkin Company occupied 65 acres of floor area and employed about 2,000 people in the manufacture of hundreds of household products, sold by mail order to customers across North America. Its story, wrote the Buffalo Courier in 1904, is “of the giant oak grown from the smallest of seeds.” The main factory at 701 Seneca Street, consisting of 12 buildings constructed sequentially over 15 years, is where the hundreds of Larkin products—soap, perfumes, coffee, chocolate, pasta, etc.—were manufactured. The buildings range from six to eight stories, and occupy in total about 1.2 million square feet of floor area, or about the same as the Chrysler Building in New York.
