Looking Backward: Allen & Wadsworth, 1955

by / Jan. 4, 2017 12am EST

Allen Street was an active place in 1955 and remains so today. In this photograph taken by Robert J. Koch on April 15, 1955, Allen Street is seen looking east from Wadsworth Street. Visible, from left to right on the north side of the street, are the Kisis Restaurant, Krotz & Son meat market, Florence Jacobs’s liquors, Nu-Way Market, Mulligan’s Brick Bar, and the Allendale Theatre. From right to left on the south side are the Allentown Bar, Edward Winter’s barber shop, Park Lee’s laundry, Jamestown Grill, Allen Pharmacy, and White Hotel restaurant. Not every building in this photograph remains standing today, but most do. Were it not for a little luck and a hard-fought campaign to create the Allentown Historic District in 1978, it may have turned out differently.
