Logic
[HIP HOP] Mental health is a topic at the center of our nation’s conversation, especially this month after the suicides of celebrities Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain. Oddly enough, that makes it a good time to revisit one of last year’s biggest summer hip hop hits. The hit we’re talking about is Logic’s “1-800-273-8255,” a song and music video that entered the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline phone number into the pop-culture lexicon. The music video explores the inner workings of a gay high school student’s mind as he deals with understanding his own sexuality, dealing with bullying, and ultimately thoughts of suicide, and provides listeners with a life line on its cover with the hopes of literally saving someone’s life through music. The song went triple platinum and, in conjunction with singles “Everybody,” and “Black Spiderman,” made Logic’s album, Everybody, which featured everyone from Killer Mike to Neil deGrasse Tyson—into last year’s blockbuster summer hip hop album. This summer, the 28-year-old nerdy rapper with a rapid-fire flow from Rockville Maryland is out on his Bobby Tarantino vs Everybody tour, along with rappers NF and Kyle, which comes to Darien Lake on Tuesday, July 3.
