Fast Romantics

[INDIE] Indie rock band Fast Romantics got a huge bump when NPR featured their song “Julia” on their Heavy Rotation playlist. “Julia” is the type of song that you find yourself singing along to by the end of the first chorus. It’s familiar, though it would be unfair to call it formulaic. It’s got all the makings of an indie rock hit along the lines of Feist or St. Vincent in a time when indie rock hits are few and far between, and although the song was released two years ago, the record to which it belongs, titled American Love, was released earlier this year on the Vancouver-based record label, Light Organ Records. The album, which the band describes as a sort of classic Hollywood romance on tape, is open and light and follows a pop-rock pedigree that traces back to Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello (the album’s title track has The Boss written all over it). Their depth doesn’t reach quite as far as contemporaries like Arcade Fire, they stay a bit closer to the surface, but one could imagine the two bands have a pretty significantly overlapping fan base. The Toronto-based band comes to Buffalo to play an intimate show at Lockhouse Distillery on Saturday, December 2 with support from Buffalo-based indie rock band, The Tins.
