The Head and the Heart
[INDIE] If you’re wondering why Seattle-based rock band The Head and The Heart are coming to Buffalo sans their front man, Josiah Johnson, it’s because his life has been in mortal danger due to a substance abuse problem. “The thinking was kind of like if we don’t do this, he’s going to die,” drummer Tyler Williams told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in an interview last week. It’s been almost a year since Johnson went on hiatus from the popular indie rock band, who released their latest record, Signs of Light, in September of 2016, only after Johnson began his rehabilitation. The album’s title comes from a song that Johnson wrote, presumably referring the his own hope for recovery. The record is also the band’s first major label release since forming in 2009, which has added to the stress of continuing as a band despite a key member. The good news, the band says, is that Johnson is steadily recovering and will return to the band when he’s as fully recovered as possible. In the meantime, the band is in good hands, with The Head and the Heart’s violinist/ banjo player Charity Rose Thielen’s husband Matt Gervais filling in on lead vocal duties. The Head and The Heart will perform at the UB Center For The Arts on Thursday, March 2.
