Thursday Night Terrors: The Thing

[FILM] The last in what seems like a highly successful horror movie series, Thursday Night Terrors, is John Carpenter’s claustrophobic classic The Thing—not to be confused with the 1952 or 2011 films of the same name. As Buffalo begins to feel more and more like Antarctica, this is clearly a fitting finale for the series as the film takes place on a frozen and storm-pummled Antarctic research base. The film, which features a blow torch toting Kurt Russell in arguably his most iconic role, follows Russell as R. J. MacReady and a group of researchers as they slowly start to realize that they’re not all who, or what, they might seem to be. “The film elicits feelings of isolation, dread, and distrust. Everyone is a suspect. When things begin to get ugly, it’s an equally spectacular and disturbing experience,” says series organizer Peter Vullo. The Thing will screen at the Amherst Dipson Theater on Thursday, December 15.
