Paper Bird

[FOLK] If you’ve been having a hard time with the bilge pump of passionless commercial country flooding your senses, Denver’s Paper Bird might just be the perfect remedy. Having undergone some game-changing lineup shifts since their 2007 inception, the indie-folk-pop ensemble is coming to Babeville’s 9th Ward in support of a self-titled new full length. It’s the sextet’s fifth release in total, but the first time they’ve put something out with the assistance of Nashville-based Thirty Tigers, a management and promotion company that’s worked recent projects for Patty Griffin, Avett Brothers, and Sturgill Simpson, among others. Paper Bird is a knockout, albeit maybe a tad slick for fans of deep twang. With a swoon-worthy trio of female vocals up front (Sarah Anderson, Genevieve Patterson, and relative newcomer Carleigh Aikens), the collection straddles the lines between folk and country with an accessible, addictive pop wash that keeps it from fully qualifying as any of the above. Consistently tasteful and satisfying, the John Oates co-produced project presents the band as the love child of mid-1970s Fleetwood Mac and Little Big Town (10 years ago), replete with singing that’ll make your eyes cross in harmonious glee. Paper Bird brings the goose bumps on Sunday, September 18 with Keenan O’Meara & Megan Lui
