[INDIE] Gabrielle Smith’s Eskimeaux began as a one-woman production in the studio and a four-piece band on the road, but that seems to be shifting toward a full-time band dynamic, as the expanded sound of OK, out last spring, showcases. There’s a rare and intimate level of sincerity permeating the set that makes her seem like a concerned friend—thoroughly approachable, earnest, and well meaning—you want her on your side, and she’s there. It also bridges the gap between the indie-folk minimalism of her early work and the more sophisticated pop of something like “Broken Necks,” a look-on-the-bright-side breakup song that’ll hijack your brain for a while. NPR seemed to think it was special, and they were right. Eskimeaux comes to Sugar City this Friday, October 9 with Attic Basement.
