The Mighty Mighty Bosstones

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones have hit many speed bumps in their 30-year career, but their music remains just as solid as ever. Their 1997 release, Let’s Face It, demonstrated their strong capacity for melodic punk, and was a huge success. Though, through the years, their brand of ska music has progressed from hard rock to a more reggae, pop-punk sound, which plays very nicely with their ska melodies. Their latest album, The Magic of Youth, is a jaunting collection filled with dynamic crescendos and unique, yet beautiful instrumentation. The album demonstrates their maturity as a band, especially in the title track, which is composed of gentle rock chords over the chorus and little reggae fills between the simple upstrokes of the verses. It’s a high-energy album that screams: “We’re still going hard!” Though they’ve shifted their influences, they still play wild punk-rock anthems in the same vein as they used to. Their in-concert stamina while playing classics like, “Texas Toast” and “Someday I Suppose” is as intense as ever. So, let’s all try to be a little more mature in 2015, and start by ringing in the New Year at the Town Ballroom, listening to a musically mature Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
