Bourbon and Coffee, with Poets

[JAZZ] Art and music collective Bourbon and Coffee have just released a new record titled Dolorous Orc. The record, an ominous mixture of spoken word poetry and improvised instrumentals, features a tribute to the late artist Phil Durgan, and also a cover of a song by famous jazz music composer Ornette Coleman. “Violence is not freedom, a weapon is not security, a bank account is not progress, time is not running out…” says vocalist Ian Be on the band’s song “Tangible Steel,” as a dark bass tone repeats and a trumpet squawks to a climax. The record, which Bourbon and Coffee will play selections from on Saturday January 3 at Sweetness 7 Cafe on Grant Street covers subjects ranging from “deified visions of love to critical examinations of political violence.” This will be a free show and the band’s last for a while.

Joining Bourbon and Coffee will be a smattering of local poets celebrating the second issue of DenimSkin, a Brooklyn literary arts publication with Buffalo roots. Poets Eric Johnt, Carly Weiser, Damian Weber and others are performing in between sets.
