David Bromberg Quintet

[FOLK] If there’s anything more entertaining than a David Bromberg show, I can’t imagine what it is. A Jewish kid from Philadelphia who found his calling in the Greenwich Village folk scene of the mid-1960s, he absorbed influences like a sponge under the tutelage of the Reverend Gary Davis. A master of every stringed instrument man has devised, he became an in-demand sideman for too many artists to name: Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Carly Simon, the Eagles, Leon Redbone. He almost accidentally backed into performing with an appearance at the Isle of Wight festival in 1970, and through that decade toured a live show that encompassed bluegrass, ragtime, country, ethnic, blues„ gospel, folk, Irish fiddle tunes, English drinking songs and any other musical genre that needed reviving. Bromberg retired from performing in 1980 to run a violin repair business with his wife, but returned to the stage in 2007. He’s back with a quintet of multi-instrumentalists, and while he can’t possibly play every song of his that you would want to hear, don’t let him get off the stage without doing “Sharon.” He comes to the Tralf Music Hall on Friday, December 18 with opening act Lisa Bouchelle.
