Kim Simmonds & Savoy Brown

[BLUES] Some 50 years on from the 1967 debut, Shake Down, and Savoy Brown is still at it. With a career built more from touring than record sales, founding guitarist Kim Simmonds is the only remaining original member; since 2009, he’s toured as Savoy Brown with Pat DeSalvo on bass and Garnet Grimm on drums. But it’s more about the endurance of the classic British Blues sound than any one player — which is a good thing, since Simmonds has seen over 60 musicians pass through since his band’s inception (including, briefly, a pre-Yes Bill Bruford). Curiously, they had some unlikely stateside success with tracks like “I’m Tired” and “Street Corner Talking,” which can still be heard on classic rock radio stations once in a while. Sounding a bit like Cream without the psychedelia, the continuing existence of Savoy Brown is a testament to the endurance of the blues, which sits rather prominently at the root of rock and roll, lest we tend to forget. It’s something to be thankful for in the wake of your ongoing carb and tryptophan binge, Sunday, November 26 at Sportsmen’s Tavern. Note: This is an early show; doors are at 3pm, music at 5pm.
