Buffalo Zine Fair

[FAIR] “Printed media is not dead!” seems to be a tagline of the Buffalo Zine Fair (and for the record, we think they’re right). Presented by Sugar City and Gutter Pop Comics, the Buffalo Zine Fair takes place this Saturday, November 12 at Sugar City on Niagara Street. The event focuses on self-published zines and DIY craft culture. Most sources trace the origins of the zine (technically short for “fan magazine”) back to the 1930s, but one blog (short for “web log”) quips that the first zine was actually Martin Luther’s Ninety-five Theses. The format rose to underground popularity in the 1970s with punk zines and then again in the 1990s with online zines, but this festival, of course, will be print dedicated. “Let us rebel against library closings, newspaper downsizings, and e-readers by celebrating good old-fashioned physical handmade print media!,” reads a press release for the event. That being said, a full list of vendors can be found on the Facebook event page, just type in Buffalo Zine Fair 2016. Entry is free.
