Flogging Molly
[PUNK] Whaddaya get when you mix the punk aesthetic with Celtic influences? Well, drunk for one thing. But you also get Flogging Molly, the L.A. based seven piece led by Dublin-born Dave King. Touring behind their sixth studio album in twenty years, Life is Good, out this past summer on Vanguard, the men of Molly come to the Rapids Theatre in Niagara Falls on Halloween, which lands on a Tuesday this year. Propelled forward to make the record with new drummer Mike Alonso after six years of heavy touring, the resulting tracks are surprisingly upbeat, save, perhaps, for the political underpinnings of lead single “Reptiles (We Woke Up).” The title track comes from a bittersweet deathbed conversation with King’s mother, finding solace in a life well lived, and on “The Guns of Jericho,” which King insists is not conceptually biblical, they try playing in an open D tuning. It is possible, apparently, to teach an old punk some new tricks. And for the faithful, they’ll definitely be dusting off some old faves, seeing as their debut, Alive Behind the Green Door, turns twenty this year – a cause for celebration, indeed. Tickets are $37 in advance — which includes a free download of Life is Good — or $43 at the door.
