Tiger Hatchery

[EXPERIMENTAL] Built around the propulsive lawlessness of Ben Billington’s drumming and Andrew Scott Young’s bass, Tiger Hatchery is back to present listeners with a challenge. A free-jazz product of Chicago’s musical underground, the band fell victim to a series of false starts, not the least of which was a sudden trip to rehab for sax-man Mike Forbes on the eve of releasing a debut disc in 2010, which got pushed indefinitely. By the time it was finally released in 2013, the band was attempting to tour, though the members were no longer all situated in one starting place. A live recording done later that year, featuring guest sax from Paul Flaherty, just came out recently, (Live in New Haven, Ergot Records), which brings us to the current Tiger Hatchery tour that arrives in Buffalo at Sugar City tonight. One thing that hasn’t changed is the music: intense, chaotic, unforgiving and a bit harsh, the trio’s experimental nature remains very much intact. Nothing ever lands in the same spot twice and the journey is just as fascinating as the outcome. But be prepared for a test: Tiger Hatchery is a tumultuous jazzy adventure not recommended for the weak of heart. Or ear. Flatsitter and Flesh Trade open the show.
