Wolf Parade

[INDIE] Add Wolf Parade’s new Sub Pop release Cry Cry Cry to the lengthening list of musical responses to the Trump administration. The Canadian indie faves have always taken a “question authority” stance, but when the quartet writing began for the new record last year after a five year hiatus, the sense of political crisis was inescapable. The album is well-permeated with disdain and frustration, but maintains a mostly sunny disposition via driving, upbeat tracks… save, perhaps, for opener “Lazarus Online.” Elsewhere, dueling vocalist/songwriters Dan Boeckner and Spencer Krug find common purpose in eluding forces of evil and destruction amid a churning, forward-moving soundtrack that lends itself to the image of the pair running from a city under siege, flames and crumbling buildings behind them. Krug finds irony in the death of Leonard Cohen just one day prior to Trump’s election in “Valley Boy,” giving voice to something about which many have privately pondered, while “King of Piss and Paper” takes direct aim at both Trump and the delusional culture that elected him – recurring themes. At a time when many artists are scrambling to offer us half-baked solutions in song, Wolf Parade’s Cry Cry Cry lives up to its title by simply reinforcing a collective sense of emergency, and looking at ways that we can try and own the ills of a society that got us to this point. Step one is admitting that we have a problem…  Wolf Parade supports Cry Cry Cry with a show at Town Ballroom on Sunday, October 15 with opener Charly Bliss.
