Project/Object

[TRIBUTE] If seeing Dweezil and company at Canalside this summer didn’t satisfy your Zappa craving, Project/Object is here for you. The name of the tribute band, which will play the Tralf Music Hall on Sunday, October 9, is taken from a Zappa concept that relates recurring themes in his music to his larger body of work—a way of referring to conceptual threads that unify his extensive catalog. As a band, Project/Object features noteworthy Zappa alumnus Ike Willis, the baritone voice of “Joe’s Garage” and “Thingfish” and Zappa’s lead vocalist/rhythm guitarist from the late 1970s until his final 1988 tour. Also in the lineup this fall is Mothers of Invention keyboardist Don Preston (1966-74) who tours with the Grandmothers of Invention as well. Given their respective tenures with Zappa’s touring bands (Willis, later years, and Preston, earlier) these shows tend to feature a wide range of material rather than focusing on any one release or time period. Hard to believe, Zappa’s debut, Freak Out, turns 50 this year.
