Aztec Two Step

[FOLK] Sometimes, just one truly excellent record is all that’s needed to keep you on the map forever. Which isn’t to imply that folk duo Aztec Two Step (Rex Fowler and Neil Shulman) has only made one excellent record—they’ve released 16, give or take. But their 1972 self-titled debut for Elektra is forever preserved in the annals of folk-pop history as required listening, featuring the earthy anthems “Baking,” “Killing Me,” and “The Persecution and Restoration of Dean Moriarty (On The Road),” the latter of which landed them on college radio where they continued building a thriving fan base throughout the decade. A PBS documentary, No Hit Wonder, tells the story of Fowler and Shulman’s creative chemistry, which is still very much evident on the 2008 release, Time it Was—The Simon & Garfunkel Songbook. This is an early show, Sunday, October 9 at Sportsmen’s Tavern.
