The Pixies

[ROCK] The Pixies are probably your favorite band’s favorite band. The band, formed in Boston in 1986, have released some of alternative rock’s most influential albums, specifically their 1988, Steve Albini-produced record Surfer Rosa. In fact, if it weren’t for Surfer Roas, we probably wouldn’t have “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” as Kurt Cobain once famously stated that the song was his attempt at biting The Pixies’ style. It’s also the reason Cobain ultimately decided to work with Albini on Nirvana’s 1993 album, In Utero. The Pixies broke up, in 1993, near the peak of their popularity, amid tensions between guitarist Black Francis and bassist Kim Deal. In 2004, after over a decade on hiatus, the band reunited, but did not release a comeback record until 2014. By then, Kim Deal had left the band, however. They released their first album without Deal, Indie Cindy, working instead with bassist Paz Lenchantin. Last year the band released Head Carrier, the better rated of their two comeback albums. For their lives shows, the band claims that they don’t have a pre-decided setlist but promise that they choose from a diverse sampling of their entire discography. The Pixies come to the UB Center for the Arts on Sunday, October 1.
