The Internet
[HIP HOP] Whatever you want to call this wave of acidic, unorthodox R&B—led on one extreme end by Flying Lotus and on the pop end by artists like Miguel—there’s no doubt it’s rise in popularity in the last few years is primarily due to the work of artists associated with the Odd Future collective. The sound, which many lazily refer to as alt-R&B is not necessarily new, but with Frank Ocean’s 2013 Grammy Award nominations for Channel Orange, the spotlight is now clearly pointing at artists like Ocean, and his Odd Future co-horts the Internet. Ocean has moved away from the group that helped him breakout, leaving the Internet to carry on the collective’s quickly constructed and impressive legacy. Their 2012 and 2013 records, Purple Naked Ladies and Feel Good, respectively, combined just the right amount of classic jazz, hip hop, soul, and R&B production with outlandish lyricism and experimental grooves and textures. The group is lead by 23-year-old producer and vocalist Syd Tha Kyd. Her productions have also appeared on recordings by rappers Mike G and Travis “Taco” Bennett, but her work on the Internet’s latest album, 2015’s Ego Death, is easily her best work to date—especially on tracks like the luscious and melting “Girl,” which allows her to match wits with another new producer, Kaytranada. The Internet comes to the Waiting Room on Monday, September 28 with Moonchild, St. Beauty, and Good Huemans.
