Peter Asher and Albert Lee

[ROCK] Eric Clapton once called Albert Lee, “…the ultimate virtuoso.” High praise, considering the source. Lee’s long career has included stints playing with Joe Cocker, Emmylou Harris, and Clapton himself, but the most significant chunk of his time was spent working as the musical director for the Everly Brothers—he was partially responsible for the duo’s 1983 reunion and continued playing and working with them from then onward. Fellow Brit Peter Asher rose to fame as half of the folkie duo Peter & Gordon, but it’s his industry pedigree as a manager and producer that shines brightest, leading him to work closely with James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, and Bonnie Raitt in the 1970s and, further diversifying his portfolio, with Cher, 10,000 Maniacs, Mary’s Danish, and Julia Fordham in the decades since. Most recently, he produced the first album of collaborations between Edie Brickell and Steve Martin, Love Has Come For You (Rounder, 2013). In 1995, he was named Senior Vice President at Sony Music, but by the early aughties, Asher was back to management. This series of acoustic duo gigs, which brings the pair to Sportsmen’s Tavern on Monday, September 25, will highlight a shared history in song, from Peter & Gordon’s “World Without Love” to tunes penned by Jimmy Webb, the late Glen Campbell, Buddy Holly and, of course, the Everly Brothers.
