[ROCK] Featuring the new rhythm section of bassist Jason Albertini and drummer Stephen Gere, both of whom were former roadies with Built to Spill, Untethered Moon (the eighth BTS release) got a hearty edit midway through the creation process when frontman Dave Martsch decided to scrap the original two-disc version because it bored him. Now a 10-track, 46-minute affair, the album is a testament to the band’s anti-formula that, while having earned comparisons to Crazy Horse, the Pixies and Dinosaur Jr., stands up all by itself. Untethered Moon is a showcase of consistency: Martsch writes about life’s comedowns with philosophical wit, punctuating the curious contrast of complex musical ingredients and lo-fi outcomes that have always defined BTS with a tone that moves between despairing and sinister. The structureless guitar passages remain—it wouldn’t be Built to Spill without them. They come to the Town Ballroom on Monday, September 21 with Clarke and the Himselfs and CROSSS.
