[HIP HOP] “Hip-hop is a beautiful culture. It’s inspirational because it’s a culture of survivors. You can create beauty out of nothingness.” This is a quote from hip hop artist Mos Def and it applies nicely to the art of breakdancing, an essential component of hip hop culture. Breakdancing is simply a person’s energy translated into hip hop terms—from standing upright to spinning on the floor in mere seconds, the message is always clearly transmitted, and can seemingly come from nowhere or perhaps from where you least expect. The 7th annual Battle @ Buffalo Under the Lights presented by Verve Dance Studio is the ultimate local expression of breakdancing and hip hop culture. The event features two vs two and one on one breakdancing competitions with prizes up to $1,000 for winners. On top of that there will be a New Era Cap design contest, live graffiti, food, art tents and multiple dance floors with DJs Sike, SC-One, and Trevthorne spinning records all day long. Battle @ Buffalo Under The Lights 7 happens this Saturday, August 26 at the New Era Flagship Store.
